Music Technology at PSU

The PSU Department of Music provides several different types of music technology courses and resources, and maintains the PSU MIDI Lab, the music media lab located in the Extended Studies Building.

For basic music technology instruction, we offer Introduction to Music Technology. This preparatory course is recommended for all music majors and any other students seeking some hands-on instruction at a very basic level. This class is not taught in the PSU MIDI Lab but makes use of the lab for several hands-on projects. No pre-requisites.

For music majors, the MIDI Applications sequence (MUS 474-475, MUS 574-575) offers an intermediate level of training targeted toward education, composition, and jazz majors. These courses are open to music majors only, the pre-requisites being Introduction to Music Technology and Music Theory 111-113.

An academic examination of music technology is offered in our Junior Cluster course, Modern Music Technology. This is not a hands-on course, but rather addresses historical, commercial, and sociological impact that developments in music technologh have effected. Assignments include a research paper and a team presentation. No pre-requisites.

A couple of our coursse, including History of Rock Music, and Film Music, address music technology in their curricula.

For those seeking an advanced level of music technology instruction, Oregon Music Technology School provides a certificate program of non-credited seminars, hosted on-campus by the Music Department.

We also maintain a site of Music Technology Resources with information on software and books, tutorials, and other helpful information on this rapidly-changing subject.
